"Forgoing the Tragically Hip sound so many associate him with, Downie and his band primarily blend folk and rock to stunning effect. Pounding drums and upbeat melodies track Wenjack's escape ... Secret Path's most powerful material makes use of minimal arrangements ... in bringing a shameful and challenging piece of history to light in hopes of long-overdue reconciliation, one of Canada's greatest songwriters has delivered one of the greatest and most important artistic statements of his career."
- Exclaim!

"... if this is the last recording we hear from him it’s a smashing way to go out ... this is no Tragically Hip album ... (the music) is appropriately haunting and phantasmic, often taking the form of vaporous spoken word pieces and generally dispensing with standard verse/chorus/verse pop structures entirely ... a hard lesson, one even harder to shake. It’s a necessary lesson. And while one rock star’s concern isn’t going to cure the ills of Canadian history, at least he’s doing the job our historians neglected to do."
- Toronto Star

The Tragically Hip's Gord Downie began Secret Path as a collection of 10 poems incited by the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old boy who died in Ontario in October 1966 during his attempt to escape a residential school and walk over 400 miles back home to the family he was taken from. Downie's poems were fleshed out into the songs on Secret Path along with producers Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin and recorded over two sessions at The Tragically Hip's Bathouse Studio in November and December 2013. The music features Downie on vocals and guitars, with Drew and Hamelin playing all other instruments except for guest contributions by bassist Charles Spearin, Ohad Benchetrit on lap steel and guitar, pianist Kevin Hearn and drummer Dave “Billy Ray” Koster. Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada’s history: the long-supressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system, with the hope of starting the country on a road to reconciliation.

"Chanie haunts me. His story is Canada’s story. We are not the country we thought we were ... the next 100 years are going to be painful and unsettling as we come to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him, as we find out about ourselves, about all of us, but only when we do can we truly call ourselves 'Canada.'"

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
