Composer Sean Hickey explores the recorder as a witness to the rise and fall of empires, crusades, wars and countless births and deaths as a musical voyeur with his work A Pacifying Weapon, artfully realized here by soloist Michala Petri. This thoughtful and exciting new work invokes the seeming futility of music in the face of tragedy and ultimately finds its ominous tremolos and climatic flourishes as weapons silencing the madness of violence.
