Georgy Sviridov was a favoured pupil of Shostakovich who created an extensive body of work, much of it for choral forces, and which often drew inspiration from Russian landscapes, folk traditions, and music of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Those characteristics are on joyful display in this Naxos release, which features Sviridov's beautiful Snow is Falling cantata, the filmic Music for Chamber Orchestra suite, and the luminous and moving Russian Adrift song cycle, featuring mezzo-soprano Mila Shkirtil.
