Alight from Vancouver-based Safa embraces the open, improvisational approach and energy of jazz, largely based in Persian idioms with an exuberant modern edge to complement the old world’s passion and melancholy. From an improvised dialogue for clarinet and kulintang, a Philippine gong row, to arrangements of four Sufi poems sung in Persian, Safa displays a love of musical exploration and expression that transcends cultures.
