The second of Miles Davis's three recording sessions for Blue Note in the mid-1950s, this album features an outstanding rhythm section (Art Blakey on drums and Percy Heath on bass), filling out the horns with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath and trombonist J.J. Johnson. The songs are drawn from a wide range of talented composers, including Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie along with Davis originals, swinging effortlessly between Afro-Cuban rhythms, blues and bebop.
