"Four Stars ... a lithe and soulful but largely forgotten disc ... Fuller fashioned an enduring jewel .... assisted by a superb band comprised of rising stars ... the musicians sound at ease with each other and with life and the feeling is infectious. This is hard bop served sunny side up."
- All About Jazz
Hard bop trombonist Curtis Fuller recorded The Opener for Blue Note in 1957, his debut for the label and one of his first sessions as leader. Featuring a dream team quintet of Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums, The Opener helped established Fuller's reputation as both an in-demand sideman and a bandleader.
