"... one of the period's finest acoustic jazz groups ..."
- All About Jazz
"The ensemble plays with great control and sensitivity, but the quality of sound Haden extracts from his bass deserves special mention ... this recording testifies that his American combo ranked among the finest jazz groups of the mid-1970s."
- Jazz.com
"... (on the) title track, the quartet acknowledge the ongoing influence of ’Trane, with a piece not unlike some of his finest mid-60s work. This is Keith Jarrett’s project however and his amazing piano improvisational work is always present ... while Redman is offered plenty of opportunities to blow, Keith is always in command."
- Blogcritics.org
Keith Jarrett and his American Quartet recorded this album of originals in late 1975 at the same sessions that resulted in Jarrett's album Shades. The quartet, comprising Dewey Redman on tenor sax, Charlie Haden on double bass and Paul Motian on drums, is joined here by percussionist Guilherme Franco.
