"Five Stars. With the most impressive group he's had since the '70s, the only thing to ask of Burton at this point in his career is: more, please."
- All About Jazz
"Four Stars ... showcases the unity forged by being on stage and finding the melodic chemistry which can be elusive to discover. That simpatico symbiosis is inherent on the 10 pieces ..."
- Audiophile Audition
"Four Stars. It's one thing to be a virtuoso player, which he is, but quite another to create a whole sonic world with just four musicians. That's what Burton has been doing consistently for more than 45 years and, as this album proves, the sounds just go on getting richer. Every one of these pieces is filled with tonal light and shade, harmonic sparkle and rhythmic subtlety."
- The Guardian
Guided Tour marks the second outing from jazz’s most innovative and accomplished vibraphonist Gary Burton and his quartet. Featuring the prodigal guitar genius Julian Lage as well as two veterans, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez, Guided Tour provides a road map to one of the most dynamic bands on the scene today. Burton sought out original material from all the group’s members, illuminating their wide range of cross-cultural musical styles. Two cover songs complete the set list: the stately Michel Legrand ballad Once Upon a Summertime and pianist Fred Hersch’s Jackalope, written mostly in 7/4 time and delightfully unpredictable in its phrasing.
"It’s the difference between playing with some excellent musicians and finding a group chemistry that goes beyond that, a coming together of creative minds. In my five decades of playing in various bands, I have only experienced this a handful of times; if even one player is not an equal part of the combination, it doesn't achieve that magical state. But from the first recording of this band, everything just clicked perfectly. If anything, we have evolved as an ensemble, which is the dream of every band leader."
