"... a fine trio of performances, individual for sure ... an encouraging start to what I hope will be an extended series."
- Gramophone
"Four Stars. Unsurprisingly, the quality of the playing here is very high ... Gardner coaxes elegant phrasing from the strings ... (he) allows the Reformation Symphony its full measure of grandeur and intensity."
- BBC Music Magazine
"... production is astonishingly good: the dynamic range, spatial detailing and clarity make for an enthralling listening experience, conveying with startling accuracy the natural ambience of the hall itself ... highly recommended, particuarly if you’re keen to experience fresh perspectives on these familiar works."
- International Record Review
This album marks the beginning of an exciting recording project from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and its conductor, Edward Gardner. Mendelssohn in Birmingham celebrates Mendelssohn’s special relationship with the city’s Town Hall and features the complete symphonies recorded at the venue which was much loved by Mendelssohn, who conducted many of his own works there, including premieres.
