Sonic Youth's foray into grunge, 1992's Dirty was produced by Butch Vig, hot off his work with Nirvana on Nevermind and the Smashing Pumpkins on Gish. Frequently mentioned by fans as one of their favourite Sonic Youth releases, Dirty peaked at number six in the UK, was named the best album of the year by Entertainment Weekly and the song 100% became a top five hit at modern rock radio in the US and a top 30 mainstream British single.
