Digital Booklet
"... the results are uniquely lovely. Holloway plays Dowland (and for that matter the Purcell) slowly, grandly, so that they achieve a stateliness somehow without losing the intimacy one expects from Dowland." - Fanfare "... the overall sense of melancholy is gloriously overwhelming ... Dowland spices his harmonies with bitter dissonances at times: the sting of sadness is part of the experience ... the music is so achingly beautiful ... a ravishing listening experience, exactly the right length, played and recorded stunningly." - ClassicsToday.com John Dowland’s Lachrimae Pavans is considered one of the greatest works in the canon of English chamber music. Based upon his famous song Flow My Teares, the seven pavans present an extraordinary exploration of the contrapuntal and harmonic possibilities offered by the theme. In this remarkable recording, Baroque violinist John Holloway creates a concert programme around the Lachrimae Pavans; threaded between Dowland’s masterpieces are works of other major composers of his era: Henry Purcell, William Lawes, John Jenkins, Thomas Morley and Matthew Locke. In bringing together these pieces of strongly contrasting colour and character, Holloway and company give us a vivid sense of the great flowering of consort music which took place in England in the 17th century.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
