The Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and conductor Paul Mann rediscover the music of Edinburgh composer Charles O’Brien with his most important work and his only symphony, a full-scale Romantic score in the tradition of Schumann and Brahms, both powerful and lyrical. It is coupled here with the later, more extended of the two versions O’Brien made of his heartening, Walter Scott-inspired overture Ellangowan, resplendent with a memorable, big Scottish tune. Both pieces receive their world premiere recordings with this release.
