Norwegian pianist and composer Ketil Bjørnstad had previously explored the life of Edvard Munch in a different creative medium, an acclaimed 1993 novel. When invited to compose music for choir in 2011 his thoughts turned once again to Munch and to the texts, still not widely known, of the painter who also aspired to be a writer. With these as his guide, Bjørnstad shaped the works on this album. Bjørnstad observes that Munch's writing is as powerful and intense as his paintings; the changing moods of the texts inspiring very different settings. Sunrise was initially released only in Norway in November 2013 to mark the 150th anniversary of Munch’s birth.
