"... a popwise country party ... it does commit to modern rhythms throughout, with Urban's virtuoso picking on six string banjo (or 'ganjo') locking in with steady bass lines and ticking drum tracks to fuse the rootsy precision of bluegrass with the uplifting persistence of EDM ... Urban's delivery, passionate yet unassuming, renders several pledges of steadfast devotion just as convincing ..."
- Rolling Stone
"... influences from places as worldly as India and Israel ... (he) time-travelled back to the ‘80s to shock himself with major doses of synth-pop ... never before has he opened himself so eagerly to a world of sound ... his outreach mirrors the general expansion of country which, over the last few years, has integrated increasing amounts of hip-hop, metal and more ... best, though, is The Fighter, a duet with Carrie Underwood which hasn’t a hint of country but which has just enough synth-pop pluck to become a pan-genre smash. B-."
- Entertainment Weekly
Keith Urban moves outside the strict confines of country music on Ripcord, incorporating tastes of rap, hip-hop, electronica and pop. Guests Pitbull and Nile Rodgers help him break new territory while Carrie Underwood duets on the pop crossover song The Fighter. Two advance singles, both released in 2015, became major country hits, setting the stage for this album with widespread anticipation: the Grammy-nominated, number two John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16 and the number six Break On Me. A third single, Wasted Time, preceded the album by a few weeks and cracked the top 15.
"It was a lot of searching, a lot of experimenting ... when you get to work with as many people as I did, you end up with a lot of stuff."
