"Four Stars ... R.E.M. continues to grow in fresh, exciting and embracing ways ... (the band) not only competes creatively with the best of the new '90s outfits, but also ranks favourably when measured against the greatest bands ever."
- Los Angeles Times
"... R.E.M.'s most ambitious album to date ... the band attempts to stitch together all the disparate mood swings that have characterized its fight to maintain its integrity in the face of both disaster and superstardom ... there's a sense of spontaneity here that's rarely been heard on an R.E.M. record ... welcome to the new beginning."
- Rolling Stone
"... reflecting the atmosphere in which the music was created, the band sounds as if it’s playing to the cheap seats; the music has a hefty girth ... finds R.E.M. returning to their joyful idiosyncrasies ... (alternates) the band’s delicate, folkish side with stadium raunch, gently subverting their own cliches along the way. ...not in years has an R.E.M. album showed such breadth ...the music feels spontaneous and bristly; equally important, so does its frontman ... this increasingly deglamorized singer has never sounded so angry, hurt and confused ... A."
- Entertainment Weekly
New Adventures in Hi-Fi is the final R.E.M. album with founding drummer Bill Berry and also the last time the band would work with longtime co-producer Scott Litt. Recorded for the most part live on the road during concerts, rehearsals and in dressing rooms, New Adventures in Hi-Fi peaked at number one in the UK and number two in the US and was included by Rolling Stone, SPIN, NME and several other music publications on their lists of the best albums of the year. Patti Smith appears on vocals on one of four studio tracks, the top five UK single E-Bow The Letter.
"I didn't wake up one day and decide, 'I just can't stand these guys anymore' or anything. I feel like I'm ready for a life change. I'm still young enough that I can do something else. I've been pounding the tubs since I was nine years old ... I'm ready to do something else."
- Bill Berry
