American ensemble the Mivos Quartet is devoted to performing the works of contemporary composers, presenting modern music to modern audiences. Garden of Diverging Paths features three recent selections for string quartet by Taylor Brook, Andrew Greenwald and Kate Soper. Literary elements inspired each piece on the album as the composers drew from figures such as minimalist artist Carl Andre and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The title track borrows its name from a short story by Argentinian magic realist Jorge Luis Borges and explores the idea of alternative histories, creating six movements based on musical histories that might have been.
