"... (the Piano Quintet) is an exultant work with plenty of joyous activity for each of the five musicians. It is demonstrative, tense and brimming with intense cantabile ... performances are more than capable with the listener gaining the feeling that the players know the music well enough to enjoy putting it across rather than having to concentrate on forming the notes."
- MusicWeb International
A cast of talented musicians shines the spotlight on two works by Bruno Walter, now considered one of the most revered conductors of his time. In the early part of his musical career, however, Walter modelled himself as both a composer and conductor, much like his friend and role model Gustav Mahler. Walter's large scale Piano Quintet, couched in the late-Romantic idiom, is a powerful expression of his consummate compositional skill. The Violin Sonata, Walter’s last chamber work, offers a study in expressive contrasts, its unsettled moods reflective of the time in which it was written.
