Sinikka Langeland plays the Finnish national instrument the kantele and is also known for her use of folk song traditions such at runic singing and kveding (ode singing). It all comes together on The Magical Forest, an inspired concept featuring Langeland’s Norwegian-Finnish-Swedish Starflowers quintet together with the singers of the Trio Mediӕval. With their affinity for folk music and unique vocal blend, the vocalists adapt themselves ideally to Langeland’s sound world, at once archaic, timeless and contemporary, as they explore much older texts in a fresh cycle of songs built upon myths and legends.
"It is inspiring to find traces and fragments of ideas about the world tree, axis mundi, in Finnskogen. I have transformed these and some parallel stories into songs that are encircled by instrumental passages and improvisations by the musicians ... every microcosm, every inhabited region, has a centre, a place that is sacred above all."
- Sinikka Langeland
