Los Angeles-based composer Paul Reale studied with George Rochberg and George Crumb, is a professor emeritus in the music department at UCLA and won the Luckman Prize in 1995. Written especially for violin soloist Jessica Mathaes, Seven Deadly Sins uses observations of human nature as well as the emotions associated with mortal transgression, creating a work full of surprise and psychological contrast. This album of all world premiere recordings ends on a much lighter note with Holiday Suite, based on familiar winter holiday tunes. The suite is "good time music, melody driven and devoid of pretension," according to Reale. Seven Deadly Sins was recorded at the studios of KUHA-FM, a Houston public radio station, in 2012 with Mathaes and pianist Colette Valentine.
