"... Groove's soul message gets through in pristine sound ..."
- Audiophile Audition
"... deftly toes the line between serious jazz and soul/pop worlds ... settles into such an easy, emphatic groove that even a first-time listener could mistake it for a comfortable old slipper."
- All About Jazz
This 1965 album from organist Richard "Groove" Holmes both confirmed his status as one of the B-3’s leading players and elevated his profile with the crossover success of his catchy, double-time version of Misty. Armed with a talented and totally sympathetic rhythm section, the album emphasizes jazz classics (including the first cover version of Horace Silver’s Song for My Father) plus two infectious originals. Holmes's unique sound creates excitement without flamboyance and allows the brilliant bass lines from his skillful pedal work to shine through with clarity, turning Soul Message into the signature album of his celebrated career.
