Over these three discs, the a cappella vocal ensemble La Compagnia del Madrigale's striking interpretation of the Responsoria is interspersed with spiritual madrigals from some of Gesualdo best-known contemporaries, whose religious texts further underline the madrigalesque nature of the Responsoria.
