Recorded here for the first time, Gordon Getty’s The Canterville Ghost is a one-act opera adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novella of the same name, set in a haunted mansion in Victorian England and depicting the Old World invaded by modern Americans. PentaTone’s American Opera Series aims to highlight the rich and varied examples of this art form’s evolution in America and the theme of Getty’s piece is perfect for the series, mirroring how European opera has been transformed by New World citizens into something fresh.
