French pianist Vladimir Stoupel presents a sumptuous array of variations by the famous 19th-century Russian composer Mikhail Glinka. Particularly notable for his contribution to opera, Glinka's piano variations were closely tied to that world, in that they were often explorations of opera melodies from works such as Cherubini's Fanika and Donizetti's Anna Bolena, both included on this release. Also included are variations on some of Glinka's own work by Russian composer Anatoli Lyadov. Stoupel sensitively approaches this favourite 19th-century genre, using an appropriately light and buoyant touch for some of Glinka's most charming pieces. “For me, it has been a great joy to conceive and record the programme featured on this CD. The idea that inspired it was twofold: on the one hand, it is made up of variation cycles...
