Quickening presents a charming collection of songs by British composer Robert Hugill. Uniting four cycles and one stand-alone song, these settings of poems by English and Welsh poets including Christina Rossetti, Ivor Gurney, A.E. Housman, and Rowan WIlliams (the former Archbishop of Canterbury) display Hugill's command of the dialogue between singer and pianist, but also his sensitive string writing, apparent in the title work which features violist Rosalind Ventris. Mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley and pianist William Vann offer up warm and evocative interpretations throughout.
