One of the most widely printed pieces of the 18th century, J. S. Bach so admired Pergolesi’s Stabat mater that he adapted the piece for his own setting of a German version of Psalm 51. Pergolesi’s original work is therefore appropriately paired here with two of Bach’s own cantatas, Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54 and Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170, performed with consummate skill by soprano Lucy Crowe, countertenor Tim Mead, and La Nuova Musica, conducted by David Bates.
