"... well worth seeking out ... its historical interest for the devoted Monk fan is off the charts ... its true merit lies in the performance and composition of the man behind it, who is brought to the fore as a personality in ways not matched even on his later and more famous masterpieces."
- Sputnikmusic
Thelonious Monk had recorded with groups of various sizes, including some trios, at Blue Note before making this album. This is a collection of tunes from his first two dates for his new label, Prestige, recorded in October and December 1952, strictly in a trio context with Art Blakey drumming on the first date and Max Roach on the second. Two other selections with Blakey come from a 1954 trio session. This album contains the debut recordings of Little Rootie Tootie, Bemsha Swing and Blue Monk.
