Violinist Yan Pascal Tortelier and Cellist Paul Tortelier are backed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under direction of Louis Frémaux on this stunning legacy recording featuring works from Édouard Lalo!
Although called a "Spanish Symphony", The Symphonie espagnole, Op. 21 is considered a violin concerto by musicians today. The piece has Spanish motifs throughout, and launched a period when Spanish-themed music came into vogue. (Georges Bizet's opera Carmen premiered a month after the Symphonie espagnole.)
Édouard Lalo wrote his Cello Concerto in D minor in 1876, in collaboration with the Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer (1847-1891). The work was premièred the following year at the Cirque d'Hiver with Fischer as soloist.
