Borrowed, Not Stolen… is recorder quartet Woodpeckers’ first ensemble album. Despite the overwhelming popularity of the recorder during the High Baroque, there is a serious lack of original Baroque repertoire for recorder quartet. That Woodpeckers nonetheless choose to present a programme from this epoch poses a few challenges, but offers significant freedom as well. That is how the title of their album, Borrowed, Not Stolen…, was brought into being. The quartet’s journey began 17 years ago while they were all living and studying in Stockholm. Bach’s wonderful work “Die Kunst der Fuge” became an early source of inspiration for them and an integral part of the programming in their first concerts. They see the work as some kind of ultimate chamber music experience. Vivaldi and Telemann are also huge favourites from the epoch, and they have included two Vivaldi concertos and a Telemann concerto written originally for four violins. As four musicians and friends from four different countries, they also have a great wealth of traditional music at their disposal, and a number of their favourite folk tunes appear on this album. Some were arranged by Woodpeckers, others recomposed, some came into being through improvising during rehearsals, and some were too good to tamper with.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
