Phil Scarff, known for pioneering the performance of Hindustani music on soprano saxophone, explores ancient traditions in a modern context in Ragamala Paintings Alive!
This musical suite is part of a larger multimedia work created in collaboration with dancer Jayshree Bala Rajamani, incorporating dance, music, spoken word, and projected images. Based on historic ragamala paintings from India, each painting has a corresponding melodic framework. Scarff employs musical “promenades” to represent the viewer entering and moving about an art gallery, with each theme anticipating the painting to come. Whether heard on its own or in conjunction with its multimedia counterparts, Ragamala Paintings Alive! takes listeners on a compelling journey through ancient traditions.
