Cloud Hill records releases the underground recordings of Wolf Biermann & Klaus Lenz Sextett for the first time!
The tape lay dormant in Biermann's archive for 50 years. Everyone involved had long since forgotten the 1973 recordings. No wonder, because this coup was simply unthinkable: the banned songwriter and the GDR's most successful bandleader, Klaus Lenz, with his jazz musicians, playing together? How and where should this be possible? It was clear that the musicians with Biermann in their luggage would not have set foot in a single studio in the GDR. But everyone wanted to record for a Biermann LP, which of course could only be released in the West!
The brilliant arranger Lenz took on the two newest Biermann songs. Biermann brought his Revox tape recorder and high-quality tapes. A studio was quickly improvised in Lenzen's bude, a little house in Berlin Lichtenberg. But what to do with all the musicians who play each other down when recording in tight spaces? The organ came into the kitchen. The brass instruments in the living room, the drummer in the hallway. The flautist went into the storage room and - the last to bite the dogs - Biermann was sent to the bathroom and sat on the toilet with his guitar in front of his microphones.
