"These are beautiful works and they receive very good performances ... the choirs sing very cleanly ... (Sancta Civitas) really is a masterpiece, a gorgeous work ... engineering is very good in terms of balances between chorus and orchestra ..."
- ClassicsToday.com
"... offers superb performances ... Hill’s recording impresses with his thrilling choruses, nuanced and exemplary in diction ... this release has many virtues and no debilitating liabilities ... ought to be acquired by anyone with an interest in this repertoire. It is powerful, lucid, beautifully sung and vividly recorded."
- Fanfare
Although Vaughan Williams described himself as "a cheerful agnostic," he was not only steeped in the traditions of the Anglican Church but sensitive to the mystical significance "of what lies beyond sense and knowledge." Written in 1936, his cantata Dona Nobis Pacem sets powerful Biblical texts alongside those by Walt Whitman and John Bright. The oratorio Sancta Civitas, one of his most original choral works, strikingly deploys vocal and orchestral forces to depict the battle between good and evil from the Book of Revelation. Conductor David Hill has earned accolades for evoking such exciting performances from this superb cast of solo vocalists, choirs and the orchestra.
