Released in 1979 as McCartney's second post-Beatles solo effort, McCartney II foretold the sound of 80s pop.
As a fan of the experimental electro-acoustic composer Stockhausen in his youth - and later one half of the electronica duo The Fireman - McCartney has consistently been an early adopter of new techniques and technology. An early example, this quality shines through in McCartney II's quirky, synth-laden sound - recorded, self-performed, and self-produced in his farmhouse in East Sussex on state-of-the-art new synthesizers and sequencers.
The resulting record is a playful and experimental effort, which met mixed reviews at the time. With reflection, we can recognize McCartney's effort as opening the doors to a new decade of electronic music.
