Neun Deutsche Arien is the first album by Ensemble C4. The early music ensemble has recorded G. F. Händel's nine German arias with Daniel Sæther (countertenor) and the instrumentalists Caroline Eidsten Dahl - recorder, Ingrid Økland - violin, Jadran Duncumb - baroque lute/theorbe, Christian Kjos - organ/harpsichord, Kate Hearne - cello, Henrikke Rynning - legs
"Neun deutsche Arien" (HWV 202–210) are rare flowers in his multifarious compositional bouquet. The collection is an unusual example of Handel composing to text in his mother tongue and where the arias are composed with unusual poetic accuracy, for the balance between words and notes appears to be perfect, penned by Heinrich Brockes. Stylistically, they are genuinely modern for their time, where they meet all the requirements for the naturalness, closeness to the text and elegance that contemporary critics and music theorists demanded. Also genuinely modern is the text by Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680–1747), who was the first German writer to cultivate nature poetry, with poems depicting "the divine nature" and people's joy in it. This poetry must be understood in the context of contemporary discourse around theology and poetics, which makes it a work of the Enlightenment, where the author grounds faith in reason, and not in revelation.
In addition to Handel, there is instrumental music by the Venetian Antonio Vivaldi for his trio sonata in G minor "La Follia". In contrast to Händel, who with his German arias is never looking to arouse overwhelming emotions in the listener, Vivaldi invites the opposite. The title means madness/frenzy, and Ensemble C4 brings this out through their performance of the work's connected eight movements.
Ensemble C4 is a Norwegian baroque ensemble consisting of three permanent members: Daniel Sæther (countertenor), Caroline Eidsten Dahl (recorder) and Ingrid Økland (baroque violin). Ensemble C4 is based in Oslo and works primarily in Norway. With its association with several freelance musicians, the ensemble remains flexible in both its expression and size. Since 2015, C4 has presented several new concert programs per year and has consequently built up a large repertoire of music taken from the period 17th-19th centuries. With long concert experience and great energy, the ensemble has developed a playful and virtuosic style that excites the audience.
