Twinkle lights draping frosted windows, the smell of mulled cider on the stove, and festive sounds grooving on the hi-fi – a cozy holiday party among best friends is a highlight of December rituals. The Cincinnati Pops has put together an eclectic album of favorite carols and songs in snappy new arrangements that promises to liven up any holiday gathering.
Led by Cincinnati Pops Conductor John Morris Russell, JOY! features music from the Pops’ beloved Holiday Pops programs, recorded live at Cincinnati Music Hall. Anything but traditional, the album includes fresh arrangements of holiday classics, like Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Christmas Overture,” Franz Gruber’s “Silent Night,” Mykola Leontovych’s “The Bells of St. Michael,” and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” as well as contemporary songs, like Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson’s “Blue Christmas” featuring singer and trombone soloist Aubrey Logan.
