A strong opponent of oppression in all its forms, composer Leonardo Balada met Martin Luther King in 1967. Sinfonía en Negro is a powerful response from Balada to King’s subsequent murder. Conductor Edmon Colomer and the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra are joined by soloists Emanuel Abbühl on oboe and Joan Enric Lluna on clarinet on the world premiere recording of the virtuoso Double Concerto. Both the Sinfonía and the Double Concerto as heard here use Balada’s pioneering blend of ethnic music combined with avant-garde techniques. In 2007 Balada won an Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters which helped make this album possible.
