It takes a whole lot of nerve to record a tribute to Thelonious Monk without a piano because the very essence of his music emanates from the keyboard. And yet, that is exactly what Pierrick Pédron and his band have accomplished here. The lineup of alto sax, double bass, drums and a guest trumpet on three tracks best reveals the audacity of a master: each instrument is laid bare for everyone to hear. Kubic’s Monk is a real jazz record, done the old way but done today.
