On their most recent recording, the renowned Molinari Quartet dives into the complete string quartets of the iconoclastic Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988).
An extraordinary creator recognized for his experimental approach, Scelsi experienced two major periods of musical production: the first from 1929 until the mid-1950s, which included a period when he took refuge in Switzerland, and the second, until his death in 1988.
During the first period, his writing was inspired by the composers of the Second Vienna School and in particular by Schoenberg with whom he studied in Vienna. His works are then dodecaphonic, atonal or serial. During the second period, he experienced a serious existential crisis and stopped composing for a few years. When he finally resumed writing, he concentrated on the monody. The melodies give way in favor of timbre plays, now the center of Scelsi's musical concerns.
The album also includes his most controversial work, his 1958 String Trio in four movements and each of them centered on a single note. Rhythmic simplicity allows him to focus his writing on colors and textures.
