The monumental release, consisting of ten albums, contains complete Joseph Haydn’s piano sonatas recorded by Korean pianist Won-Sook Hur. The artist, known for her concert and pedagogical activities in Europe and Asia, appreciated in the past, among others, for her recordings of Goldberg Variations, devoted five years to the implementation of the project, which resulted in the presentation of as many as 56 piano sonatas by the oldest representative of the First Viennese School. The pianist takes great care of each of them, bringing out the most beautiful, original and noteworthy features in the composer’s oeuvre.
Haydn was a versatile artist, putting melodic, harmonic and textural invention above strict formal patterns. Although the sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven are performed much more often, the compositions by the oldest representative of the First Viennese School are in no way inferior to them – they abound in affection, sentiment and humour; this is a twelve-hour feast for lovers of the Classical era.
