"The quartet swings as Hawkins cuts loose on tenor."
- Audiophile Audition
"Quintessence remains a fine late example of his exquisitely assured and compelling approach to a poignant ballad."
- Jazz.com
Today And Now is one of three albums tenor sax player Coleman Hawkins recorded for Impulse! Records in 1962 while continuing to work as a very in-demand session musician with Duke Ellington, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and many others. Today And Now includes an unusual choice of repertoire for the day, performed with creativity and inspiration. The album's highlight is the Quincy Jones composition Quintessence recorded by the quartet in one take, which Jazz.com called "outstanding, a work of superior merit."
