Lou Donaldson's Sweet Lou marked the end of the saxophonist's long and fruitful association with Blue Note. Released in 1974, the recording is a big band session that includes electric guitars, an electric bass, drums and percussion as well as electronic keyboards and synthesizers played by arranger and conductor Horace Ott. Most significantly, Donaldson plays a Varitone saxophone, a sax with a pickup and electronics unit that allowed him to alter his sound and introduce various effects. Some of this material shows a Stevie Wonder influence, most apparent in the keyboard arrangements.
