Igor Stravinsky’s wild Russian folk-fable of a ballet The Firebird, retains the power to shock and enthrall into its second century. Kicking off the program is the 2002 orchestral piece Choral—based on the familiar Bach chorale “Es ist genug”—from Esa-Pekka Salonen’s longtime friend Magnus Lindberg. Alban Berg’s last completed score and probably his most famous, the Violin Concerto functions both as an elegy for a surrogate daughter who died too soon, and as a requiem for himself. The Firebird was Igor Stravinsky’s first success—a ballet based on Slavic folklore for the Ballets Russes in Belle Époque Paris. Prince Ivan Tsarevich faces Kaschei, a monstrous king whose immortality is protected by a magic egg. The Firebird is captured by Prince Ivan, and it gives him an enchanted feather in return for its freedom. Later, when Ivan is taken captive by Kaschei, the feather summons the Firebird who helps defeat the tyrant. Stravinsky’s magnificent score was deeply rooted in Russian folk song and opera, while also discovering new colors and rhythms that would influence orchestral music forever after.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
