"Stodge no more. In Christopher Hogwood's hands, Messiah was no longer a ponderous and portentous work, but something tightly sprung and which demanded your attention."
- BBC Music Magazine
"... the Messiah that started it all, the first period instrument performance recorded with a choir of men and boys. It introduced music lovers the world over to Christopher Hogwood, Emma Kirkby and a whole host of performers who have since become ubiquitous ... Hogwood's performance still holds its own as one of the finest and freshest available. A first-rate effort."
- ClassicsToday.com
Christopher Hogwood’s 1980 recording of Messiah is considered one of the finest of all time, winning accolades and awards at the time of its release and still revisited as a definitive version of this magnificent work. The album is included on BBC Music Magazine's list of the top 50 greatest recordings of all time, while The Guardian called it "iconic" and Gramophone referred to it as "groundbreaking." Hogwood uses the 1754 Foundling Hospital version, with two sopranos, on this record.
