It used to be said that you have to understand jazz to understand hip hop. Nils Wülker, the songwriter with the trumpet, is the best example: he came to jazz through a Blue Note sample by Herbie Hancock in US3's “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)”. With ON, almost 25 years later, he has now created a hybrid fantasy of the most musical nature: Great songs, brute funk, energetic improvisations and elegant electronic sounds, two vocal pieces with the (semi) American Viennese Rob Summerfield and a casual feature by Marteria merge here to form a surprising, equal union of jazz and hip hop.
