Although small in scale, the Op. 2 set of symphonies by Franz Ignaz Beck includes some of the most striking and harmonically daring works of their kind from the mid-18th century, performed here by Canadian ensemble Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra. Beck is acknowledged today as one of the most forward-looking and inventive of the period's symphonists; this programme provides ample justification for that reputation. One of Canadaʼs leading chamber orchestras, Thirteen Strings consists of 13 professional string players directed by award-winning conductor Kevin Mallon.
