This historic album featuring Russian string ensemble the Borodin Quartet was recorded on location in Moscow in June 1962 and contains the first recordings ever made in the Soviet Union by American technical and musical personnel and equipment.

This title is a high-resolution digital transfer of material originating from an analogue recording. It may be limited in bandwidth and dynamic range by the technology available at the time of its original creation, and is offered as a high-quality documentation of a historical release. This album was made during the first recording sessions ever held in the Soviet Union by non-Soviet technicians and musical staff, using equipment transported from the US especially for this purpose. The Shostakovich Quartets were recorded on June 17, 1962, at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, using three Schoeps M201 microphones. Original recording on 35mm 3-track magnetic film, which has been lost. Originally released as SR90309. This album was remastered from a 2-track magnetic tape using Wilma Cozart’s original 3–2 mix.
