"... pride of place goes to the present offering not least for its spectacularly superior sound transparently capturing the stillest moments in a spaciousness gorgeously, gloriously, tumultuously filled at the climaxes."
- Fanfare
"... (distinguishing this recording is) the conductor's inspired handling of each part's central dance panels. Hickox makes you believe in them, with a judicious drive, lift to the rhythms, and really incisive, eager singing and playing."
- Gramophone
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra presents these two works by Delius on this classic double set, recorded in 1996. The orchestra is conducted by Richard Hickox and joined by a cast of wonderful solo vocalists, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the Waynflete Singers on this album, only the third commercial recording of A Mass of Life and the only modern version.
