"... recommended, not only for the considerable listening pleasure it offers, but also for the varied and satisfying feast of the different stylistic forms it displays."
- Classical.Net
"I’m enjoying exploring the music of Piazzolla ... (it’s fascinating) to hear how (Cotik) interprets the passionate music of his great countryman."
- BBC Music Magazine
"Four Stars ... an exceptional point of view on Piazzolla’s broad range of work. Cotik and Lin view the scope of Piazzolla’s work through the lens of the violin-piano sonata, as rigorous and detailed as Piazzolla is likely to get, but also with free expression. The romance, longing and violence are all here ..."
- DownBeat
"Some of the music is sultry while other works are fast, rhythmic and ornamented to show the exquisite virtuosity of Cotik and Lin. They finish with a rousing dance called Libertango ... a perfect finale for this CD of catchy, toe-tapping music. Many other artists have recorded Piazzolla’s works, but not with violin and piano. The sound on this disc is clear and the performances precise. I think that lovers of tango music will definitely want this fascinating disc."
- Fanfare
Argentinian violinist Tomas Cotik and Shanghai-born pianist Tao Lin marked the 20th anniversary of the death of Astor Piazzolla in 2012 with this highly acclaimed recording of two of his most popular and enduring pieces, Oblivion and Libertango, presented here in Cotik’s unique arrangements. Among the programme's other works, Cotik and Lin summarize the genre’s entire evolution with the Histoire du Tango, while Le Grand Tango is a virtuoso show stopper.
"I made sporadic attempts to get this project off the ground during several return trips to Buenos Aires, but it was the 20th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death in 2012 that motivated me to realize my dream. The goal was to authentically recreate the language of the Nuevo Tango in arrangements employing a variety of styles, from extremely simple to near-virtuosic, reviving the violence and sensuality of Piazzolla's music by using the highest recording quality."
