"... violinists Gidon Kremer and Patricia Kopatchinskaja (are) both sensational players with huge personalities ..."
- The Guardian
"Four Stars ... (Twilight) has long, extended moments of great beauty and a sense of transformation, not resignation. It is an altogether lovely work ... Kancheli is a truly unique composer ..."
- Audiophile Audition
Chiaroscuro from the Kremerata Baltica chamber ensemble marks composer Giya Kancheli's 80th birthday and features premiere recordings of two major works: the title piece Chiaroscuro for violin and chamber orchestra and Twilight for two violins and chamber orchestra. Ensemble leader Gidon Kremer is joined by Patricia Kopatchinskaja on Twilight, bringing together two of the most powerfully expressive violinists of our era. The piece is a touching meditation on mortality, written at a time when Kancheli was recovering from illness and seeing in the leaves and branches of poplar trees outside his window a metaphor for change and transformation.
