"This is just good, clear Beethoven ... anyone collecting this series will want this: the sound and ensemble are both top-notch ..." - Classical.Net "... Thomas continues his impressive Beethoven series with this issue featuring the seldom-heard Cantata ... there are traces of later Beethoven; he even used one of the themes years later in Fidelio ... an important addition to the catalogue, as is the sprightly account of the Second Symphony. Excellent sound as usual from the engineers ..." - ClassicalCDReview.com This powerful recording from Michael Tilson Thomas and the Grammy-winning San Francisco Symphony and Chorus features two compositions from early in Beethoven's career. The rarely performed and recorded Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II for chorus, vocal soloists and orchestra is a glorious and profoundly moving tribute written by the 19-year-old Beethoven and clearly foreshadows greatness to come. In his playful Symphony No. 2, Beethoven displays what a true master he had become. Both works were recorded live in May 2013 and feature a glorious solo quartet, consisting of soprano Sally Matthews, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford, tenor Barry Banks and bass-baritone Andrew Foster-Williams.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
