Digital Booklet
"... a bold creative leap forward from his previous quartet recordings ... a big, colourful piece, full of stylistic variety. Dense ensemble sounds are balanced with sparser textures. Formanek has a collection of very distinctive players to draw on ... a remarkable achievement ..." - All About Jazz The Distance from bassist-composer Michael Formanek is a sweeping, ambitious project showcasing his texturally rich music for the dynamic 18-piece group he has playfully dubbed Ensemble Kolossus. Reimagining what a big band can be, Formanek channels sounds from the classic to the modern as his bold, beautiful vision for 21st century large ensemble jazz comes vibrantly to life. "... I wanted a large, rich, chewy sound with this music and the ensemble’s rhythm section is particularly big, with piano, marimba, guitar, bass and drums. I also wanted a lot of different colours and textures, with some sharp edges occasionally. With the way this group works, there’s a lot of written material but also a lot of freedom in how we get from one point to the next. Things are riskier than with the usual big band." - Michael Formanek

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
